How to Cultivate Your Ayahuasca Experience

Are you looking for healing and personal growth? Why not give an ayahuasca ceremony a try?  In such a ceremony, you are seeking healing of not only your body but also of your mind and spirit. You will learn how to make peace with yourself and with the others around you, and you may even have deep insights that will show you how to improve your life. The ceremony is different for everybody, and some people experience it more powerfully than others. That being said, there are some things that you can do to prepare yourself for your ayahuasca experience discussed down below:

Approach it with respect

This medicinal blend is powerful. As with anything powerful, you should know to approach it with respect. Ayahuasca is used ceremonially, and each experience is led by a shaman that has worked with the plant time after time in the past. To ready yourself for your ayahuasca experience, it is important that you prepare your body by avoiding alcohol, meats, dairy, salt, sugar, and sexual activity for approximately a week before. Approach the preparation period with an attitude of respect as well, as it will determine your commitment and discipline to go through with the ceremony itself.

Determine your intention

Most people decide to participate in an ayahuasca ceremony to seek healing or wisdom for something in particular. There should be something you want to get out of the experience, and it’s important that you spend some time determining that intention. Why have you chosen to drink the ayahuasca drink? Why were you willing to take time and money to do so? What are you going through at this point in your life that you are seeking wisdom for? Is there anything specific that you are looking to learn or understand? As you take some time to contemplate this, you’ll get a deeper understanding of what you are seeking. Keep in mind that you may or may not receive wisdom reflecting your intention, but when you are centered on your intention for the duration of the ceremony and even for the days beforehand, you can stay present during the ceremony and stay purposeful even if the night is hard.

Eliminate all expectations

You’ve most likely gone online and read about the ayahuasca experiences of other individuals. Perhaps you even heard some from your friends. It can be incredible to learn of the revelations and insight that they saw during their ceremonies. This often results in you approaching the ceremony with certain expectations, convinced that you’re going to be a new person when morning comes. This is a mistake.

Ayahuasca gives you what you need, not what you want. You aren’t going to have the exact experience that someone online did. There may be ceremonies that are amazing and spiritual, and there may be some that are downright dull. By eliminating all expectations beforehand, you can feel fulfilled no matter what your experience is. The only expectation that you should have is the expectation to learn something. This may be through powerful spiritual experiences and healing or even by noticing the mental judgments you are going through. Spend time thinking and contemplating even as you go through the ceremony, and you’re sure to leave having learned something.

Embrace the cleansing

Before the healing can take place, you are often ridden of all toxins and impurities in your physical body, your mental body, your emotional body, and even your spiritual body. This means you may vomit, urine, defecate, cry, yawn, sigh, stretch, shake, or experience any number of things. This means that energy and impurities are being released. Embrace the cleans and know that it is part of the healing process. It wasn’t meant to be pleasant or enjoyable in the first place. However, it is a chance to leave everything you were carrying behind.

Arrive with a learning attitude

An ayahuasca ceremony is a learning experience. You won’t only learn about yourself, but about other people, life, spirituality, and even being able to go beyond. You may find that you see things a little differently after the ceremony, and this is not uncommon. It may be difficult to leave your old belief systems behind. You don’t necessarily have to, either. However, you have to embrace ayahuasca with a learning attitude. You don’t always have to be in control. Let yourself be open to seeing the world in a completely different way.

Lean into the emotion

There are a lot of feelings and emotions involved in an ayahuasca ceremony. You may get to relive your past in a different way, and you may feel guilty, afraid, shameful, and even angry. During an ayahuasca ceremony, let your emotions be out in the open. You don’t have to suppress or hide them. If you are overcome by strong emotion, lean into it and let yourself feel it. You are in a place where you are free to experience it.

Walk willingly into non-ordinary states

Some people experience different mental, emotional, or spiritual states during the night. Some see vibrant geometric colors, some see deep insight, and others still get to seek the presence of a teacher. Know that you may experience a non-ordinary state during an ayahuasca experience. If this does occur, stay focused and approach it with an open mind. An analytical mind will just close you off from getting the most out of your experience. Even if you don’t happen into a non-ordinary state, however, don’t worry. All that this means is that the plant is choosing to teach and heal you in a different way.
